What is Semaglutide?Semaglutide is a medication used for weight management in adults who are overweight or obese. It belongs to a class of drugs known as GLP-1 receptor agonists. It is used in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. To read about the clinical effectiveness of oral semaglutide from the National Library of Medicine, click here.
-
How does it work?Oral semaglutide works by mimicking the action of a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). GLP-1 is released from the intestine in response to food intake and helps regulate blood sugar levels and appetite. Oral semaglutide activates GLP-1 receptors, leading to increased insulin secretion, reduced glucagon secretion, slowed gastric emptying, and increased feelings of fullness. These combined effects contribute to weight loss. In simple terms, semaglutide is able to help with: Decreasing appetite The feeling of fullness and satisfaction from smaller meals More controlled and stable blood sugar levels Semaglutide is best combined with our recommended program to help you track your food consumption and exercise journey. This will enhance the effectiveness of semaglutide and help you notice a change in your body weight more quickly.
-
Why receive B12 injections?Vitamin B12 is generally very well tolerated and, in some studies, has shown to help lose 2-4 pounds per week alone. Possible but uncommon side effects include headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and local injection site reactions (redness, itching, pain). Much like semaglutide, these side effects typically get better over time if you continue to stay on the medication.
-
Is Semaglutide a stimulant? No, Semaglutide is not a stimulant. Stimulants have been used for weight loss (such as phentermine), which can curb appetite. However, Semaglutide works differently by supporting natural functions of the body.
-
What are the side effects? While semaglutide can be effective in promoting weight loss, it may also have some side effects. Common side effects may include: Nausea: Some individuals may experience mild to moderate nausea, especially during the initial weeks of treatment. Taking the medication with food can help reduce this symptom. Vomiting: In some cases, vomiting may occur, particularly if nausea is severe. Contact your healthcare provider if vomiting persists. Diarrhea: Loose stools or diarrhea might occur. Staying hydrated and consuming a balanced diet can help manage this side effect. Abdominal Pain: Mild abdominal discomfort might be experienced by some individuals. This usually improves over time. Decreased Appetite: While this can be beneficial for weight loss, some people may find their appetite significantly reduced. Hypoglycemia: There is a risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), especially if used alongside other medications that lower blood sugar.
-
What are the contraindications?Certain medical conditions and medications may contraindicate the use of oral semaglutide. Inform your healthcare provider if you have: A history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (a type of thyroid cancer) or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Allergies to semaglutide or any of the ingredients in the medication. Severe gastrointestinal disease, including gastroparesis or inflammatory bowel disease. A history of pancreatitis. Impaired kidney function.
-
What else do I need to know before I get started?Always take semaglutide as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Notify your healthcare provider of all medications, supplements, and medical conditions you have. If you experience severe or persistent side effects, contact your healthcare provider. Regularly monitor your blood sugar levels as directed. Semaglutide is a part of a comprehensive weight loss program, including a healthy diet and exercise. Attend all follow-up appointments to track your progress and adjust your treatment plan as needed.

What is the research behind Semaglutide? An early study of 2,000 obese adults revealed that people using semaglutide plus a diet and exercise program lost 15-20% of their starting weight over the course of 68 weeks, while participants who incorporated only lifestyle changes without semaglutide lost about 2.4% of their weight. In other clinical trials, patients using Semaglutide experienced an average weight loss of 9-17% of their starting weight.
